FSI D60 Stump Grinder in Professional Use with Tree Care Specialist Sebastian Möller
On a clear, sunny autumn morning in October, we meet Sebastian Möller, Diploma Engineer and FLL-certified tree inspector, during one of his assignments. For over 20 years, Möller has led “Der Baumläufer”, a company specializing in professional tree care, which he founded in 2000 in Knüllwald, northern Hesse. The company offers a broad spectrum of services related to trees and their care – from classic tree care through tree inspections, crown stabilization and rope climbing techniques to root zone aeration. Additionally, tree felling, new plantings, and a chipping service for wood chip production are part of the offering. Customers include public contractors, landscape construction companies, property management firms, forestry administrations, as well as private garden owners.
An Investment That Proves Itself with Every Use
Today, the focus is on deploying a special machine: Around two years ago, Möller decided to acquire the self-propelled and radio-controlled FSI D60 stump grinder from VOGT. It is an important component of his machine fleet and is regularly used to remove tree stumps quickly and efficiently.
In a private garden near Homberg, Möller’s team recently felled three trees: a cherry tree with a diameter of approximately 60–70 cm and two elms, each about 30 cm thick. So that the garden can shine in new splendor, the remaining tree stumps must now be removed.
While Möller comfortably operates the stump grinder using the remote control, we observe the FSI D60 in action. The two smaller elm stumps are child’s play for the machine – they are completely removed within five minutes. However, the situation is different with the cherry tree: its trunk is significantly larger and the root system is deeply anchored in the ground. But here too, the FSI D60 shows its strengths. With a grinding depth of up to 60 cm, it manages to eliminate the stubborn root system and cleanly remove the tree stump. The work on the cherry tree takes somewhat longer than the two previous stumps (approximately 25 minutes), but the machine handles this task effortlessly as well.
When Design is a Victory in Itself
Particularly practical is the large swing range (2200 mm) of the FSI grinder, which gives Möller high flexibility during the grinding process. After the stumps are removed, the resulting hole is filled back in with the machine’s dozer blade. Möller pushes the ground material into the holes left from the stumps, so that the ground is immediately ready for seeding – a level lawn area can be created.
Möller is enthusiastic about the compactness (only 800 mm outside width) and performance (60 HP HATZ diesel engine) of the FSI D60, especially compared to his previous stump grinder. That one was larger, heavier, and more difficult to maneuver which was particularly a disadvantage when working in tight urban areas or with narrow garden access. Another point that Möller appreciates about the FSI D60 is the closed design. With his previous grinder, chips and dirt regularly flew into the engine compartment, leading to unnecessary maintenance effort. The stump grinders from FSI are designed so that this cannot happen.
“The FSI D60 has absolutely proven itself for us,” says Möller at the end of the assignment. “We continue to rely on the stump grinder from FSI because it efficiently removes tree stumps while being easy to handle.” With machines like the FSI D60 and a dedicated team, Möller continues to offer comprehensive solutions in the field of tree care and ensures that every tree is treated professionally and sustainably.
